Do you have a nan or grandad, mother or father who is over 65 and has had a fall or is at risk of falling?

In March 2014, we will be launching our third FREE “Stepping On” Falls Prevention program. The program will run at the St Georges Basin Country Club in Sanctuary Point.

What is it?
Stepping on is a FREE community program for people over 65 years old who have had a fall or are at risk of falling.

The exciting program provides participants with information on how to reduce their risk of falling and how to maximise their independence at home. There will be a range of interesting guest speakers including a pharmacist, occupational therapist and vision expert, in addition to our very own Dietitian Karla Horlyck & physiotherapist Rob Satchell. Participants are taught how to get up from a fall, how to make their home safer, safety in public places and how to pick safe footwear. Each participant is given a simple program of daily exercises to improve their balance and strength.

It is a 7 week program consisting of 2 hours per week– roughly 1hr of lectures and 30 – 60 mins of gentle strength and balance exercises. There is a follow up booster session 2 months later to help participants stay on track.

Is it effective?

The program is based on scientific research. It has been shown to reduce a participants’ risk of falling by up to 30%.

Participants gain increased confidence, strength, balance and independence. In past programs, we have had participants who were initially unable to get up out of a chair. After 7 weeks they are able to get out of a chair confidently, safely and most importantly, independently. The program helps people return to doing their everyday activities safely and without risk of falling.

When?

The program will run every Wednesday at the St Georges Basin Country Club starting from the 26th of March. There is a $3 donation per class for morning tea, provided by the club.
